Casting Associate (Freelance)

Department: Talent Department
Location: New York, NY
Reports To: Head of Talent
People Manager: No
$5000 to $6000 per month

NowThis is seeking a Casting Associate who will play a pivotal role in identifying, vetting, and booking the “real people” for our digital series. Your primary mission is to find authentic, charismatic individuals who fit the creative needs for each show (ranging from dating to fashion to pop culture). This person will rely on their skills to source and vet undiscovered talent while ideally, leveraging an existing network of more established talent (comedians, creators, human interest). The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of social media culture, nonscripted casting experience with strong industry connections and a passion for discovering rising stars.

Key Responsibilities
Active Scouting: Proactively hunt for talent across Instagram, TikTok, dating apps, and community hubs. You aren’t waiting for applications; you’re “cold-calling” the perfect candidate for our shows – ranging from dating to fashion concepts that rely on the most authentic, “real people of NY” talent.

Inbound & Pitch Management: Systematically track interested talent and manage the influx of inbound pitches (from agents, managers, or self-submissions). You will evaluate these leads to determine if their stories or personalities align with current or upcoming casting needs.
Vetting & Auditioning: Conduct initial screenings to assess personality, “camera presence,” and dating history. You need to weed out the “clout-chasers” in favor of authentic storytellers.
Logistics & Scheduling: Manage the casting calendar, coordinate filming slots, and handle all intake paperwork/releases.
Reliability Management: Act as the primary point of contact to ensure talent is prepped, excited, and committed to their filming dates.
Database Building: Maintain a “rolodex” of diverse, interesting singles ready to be deployed for future episodes or segments.
Talent Department Support: Assist the broader Talent Department with additional casting & booking as needed.
The Casting Producer will be based in our New York City office and report to the NowThis’ Head of Talent.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
  • Research, identify, and connect with real people who fit our casting needs – ranging from real people of New York to established creators, comedians, and up-and-coming talent across social media platforms
  • Build and maintain a database of potential talent, categorized by skills, platforms, and relevance to ongoing projects
  • Lead the casting process for projects in development, including short-form series, branded content, and pilots
  • Evaluate talent for fit with project concepts, ensuring alignment with brand tone, audience preferences, and creative goals
  • Conduct auditions, interviews, or chemistry tests as needed to assess talent suitability. Receive talent self-tapes on an ongoing basis
  • Work closely with development producers, digital original producers, and social media managers to align talent selections with project objectives
  • Partner with Integrated Marketing team when asked to concept ideas that fit client objectives while maintaining NowThis’ creative integrity
  • Cultivate strong relationships with agents, managers, and talent to ensure access to a diverse and high-quality pool of candidates
  • Serve as a point of contact for creators and talent, fostering positive and professional experience
  • Provide input during development phases to shape concepts around specific talent or creator strengths
  • Assist in negotiating contracts and scheduling talent for production when necessary
  • Engage in brainstorms, general producing, and production tasks as needed

SUCCESS WILL LOOK LIKE:
  • Identification and successful onboarding of creators, comedians, and emerging talent that align with NowThis’s creative vision and resonate with social media audiences
  • Seamless casting of talent for development projects, always-on series and branded content, resulting in strong audience engagement and positive feedback
  • Establishing a robust network of creators, comedians, and personalities ensuring a diverse and reliable talent pool for current and future projects

MUST HAVES:
  • 3+ years of experience in casting, talent relations, or a related field, with a focus on digital media or social-first content
  • Proven track record of successfully casting real people for nonscripted programming (social or TV) creators, influencers, comedians, and booking celebrity talent for digital or short-form projects
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and the creators, trends, and formats that drive success on each
  • Experience booking high-profile talent and managing relationships with agents and publicists
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to assess talent suitability quickly and match creators to project needs effectively
  • Highly connected in the creator and entertainment industry, with a passion for discovering and championing new talent
  • Collaborative and adaptable, thriving in fast-paced, dynamic environments
  • Culturally savvy and in tune with Gen Z audiences
